Voting for the Big Lottery Fund’s The People¹s £50 million Contest
begins on Monday (November 26) when Sustrans – the UK’s leading sustainable
transport charity – will compete with three other finalists for the ‘winner
takes all’ prize. Victory for Sustrans’ Connect2 bid would make everyday journeys
easier for 79 communities throughout the UK, including 11 in Wales.
Up
to 50 supporters are expected to take part in activities at three of the proposed
Connect2 schemes with the biggest gathering taking place on the Trevithick Trail.
Various forms of traffic-free travel will be on show as families and children
get joined by Tydfil the Tortoise – Merthyr Tydfil’s road safety mascot
– on a three-mile round trip on the trail, which will be enhanced by a new bridge
if Connect2 wins.
Other supporters will pedal 14 miles along the Trevithick and Taff trails to
the Treforest Scheme with some planning to continue an additional eight
miles to the Ely River Connection Scheme in Cardiff.
Sustrans’ National Director for Wales Lee Waters said: "It is fantastic
to see the enthusiastic support we are receiving in the build up to the public
vote. Connect2 is the only chance to get some of the £50 million into
Wales and we hope as many people as possible will log on and vote – and encourage
their friends, family and colleagues to do the same."
