Hell of the Ashdown 08

Pit yourself against a series of the most testing climbs that Catford CC have
managed to find in the South. Out in the winter weather when you could be in
front of a roaring fire with your feet up. But they know however that you’re
made of tougher stuff on January 28.

It will certainly tax your strength and if you don’t come back exhausted
then you’ve not tried. But, like a mini Tour de France! when you’ve
recovered you’ll be just that much fitter. In fact if you get in a fast
group it might even feel like the Tour, but without the crowds lining the ‘cols’
you’ll climb.

Still it’s not all pain, there will also be pleasure, as you wend your
way through the finest scenery that Kent, Surrey and Sussex have to offer. The
waymarked rolling route starts in the village of Knockholt and follows quiet
Kentish lanes southwards until it eventually tops the wild, high moorland of
Ashdown Forest. Then descends and climbing the mile long steep hill at Groombridge,
returns via Ide Hill and the ‘sting in the tail’, the dreaded Star
Hill.

The ‘toughies’ follow this 100K route but those that are not so
confident of their staying power choose the 50K option which cuts out the most
southerly hills.
