As we know all too well our summers aren’t always totally dry, so having a lightweight breathable rainproof jacket is always handy to save a chill turning into a summer cold. We find summer jackets really useful for long descents or early morning rides when the temperature’s not quite warm enough for short sleeves. If you’re going off for a long ride in the hills or mountains then a wind and shower proof top is a real essential and a lifesaver in an emergency. It may not be necessary to by an expensive jacket with sealed seams for summer use, you probably won’t get as much use from it as a winter jacket, other features worth considering are packability and ventilation such as pit zips etc. Hopefully you’ll have the jacket stuffed in your jersey pocket for most of the time, so it’s best to opt for something that packs down small for comfortable stowage.
Parrot Amazon Shell
The Amazon Shell is a lightweight and highly versatile jacket capable of spring through to autumn use for any active use including running, walking and cycling. With Pertex fabric’s excellent windproof properties coupled with Velcro cuffs and high fleecy neck you’ll stay warm on chilly descents and have the flexibility of ventilation thanks to the mid length zipper. Capable of holding out a shower or two, the Pertex fabric isn’t designed to keep out heavy rain, but with its lightweight properties and good breathability it’s ideal for warm weather use. Best of all the shell packs up into its front zipper pocket and can be stuffed into a jersey pocket. |

A super lightweight and high performance jacket constructed from Gore-Tex Paclite, it weighs in at 30g lighter than last year’s model apparently. You don’t have to spend much on a summer jacket, but the more you spent the more breathable the fabric will be, providing enhanced comfort and greater performance. If you ride hard or commute long distances we’d recommend the Gore Paclite lll for full waterproof and highly breathable jacket that will last well too and could cope in winter with the right layers underneath. If you don’t need that kind of weatherproofing and want a compact stowable jacket for occasional use the Lusso Aquacape is a useful option. |
