Sprinters dominate Olympic test event provisional start list

Mark Cavendish is the star name on a provisional start list packed with sprinters for the London 2012 Olympic road race test event on Sunday August 14.

Trade team loyalties will be cast aside on Sunday August 14

Trade team loyalties will be cast aside for the the London-Surrey Cycle Classic – and Tyler Farrar, Matt Goss, Tom Boonen, Julian Dean, Romain Feillu and Borut Bozic, who all rode the Tour de France, are set to go head-to-head with Cavendish in the expected bunch gallop on The Mall.

The 28 teams have named their provisionals squad, which will be trimmed down to five riders over the coming weeks.

Farrar, who won stage stage three of this year’s Tour de France when riding for Garmin-Cervelo, is expected to spearhead the USA’s attack, while Dean, who normally completes leadout duties for Farrar, is named in New Zealand’s squad.

Geraint Thomas, who will concentrate his efforts on the team pursuit during the Games, is absent from Great Britain’s squad, with four from fast man Ben Swift, Peter Kennaugh, Ian Stannard, Alex Dowsett and Roger Hammond to join Cavendish in the final team.

In a bid to field as many riders as possible, British Cycling have also entered an ‘England’ team, with Jeremy Hunt, Russell Downing, Chris Froome, Adam Blythe, Steve Cummings and Dan Lloyd on the provisional start sheet.

Tour de France stage winner Tyler Farrar is expected to lead the USA’s team

Australia have named a seven-man squad with five sprinters – Milan-San Remo winner Goss, Michael Matthews, Heinrich Haussler, Chris Sutton and Leigh Howard – to choose from alongside veteran road captain Stuart O’Grady and three-time track world champion Jack Bobridge, who today signed for the country’s new GreenEdge team.

Boonen, world champion in 2005, is named in Belgium’s squad, while Bozic and Feillu are expected to undertake sprint duties for Slovenia and France respectively.

The London-Surrey Cycle Classic will be run over a 140km course, including two laps of a 15.5km Box Hill circuit where spectators will be limited to just 3,400, before the flat run-in back to London, which is set-up for a sprint finish in front of Buckingham Palace.

Nineteen national teams will contest the race alongside nine domestic trade teams – Cyclepremier–Metaltek, Endura, Motorpoint, Team Raleigh, Rapha Condor Sharp, Sigma Sport, An Post Sean Kelly, Twenty3c-Orbea and Team Corley Cycles.
