UCI Track World Championships day five: photo gallery

Team GB will fly home from Australia filled with confidence after another hugely impressive performance at the last significant competition before the Olympics.

The closing day of the 2012 UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne brought another medal haul for Great Britain and a place at the top of the medal table.

A championship without a gold medal for Sir Chris Hoy – the aberration of last year’s worlds – would have been unthinkable after his performances at the London World Cup in February, and the Scotsman delivered in impressive style with gold in the men’s keirin.

Gold medalists from the first day of finals, Geraint Thomas (team pursuit) and Ben Swift (scratch race) teamed up on the final day for a silver in the madison.

Wendy Houvenaghel, with a point to prove after being left out of the women’s team pursuit squad, rode strongly to reach the final of the individual pursuit, where she won silver.

And Jess Varnish, among the world’s best ‘woman one’ riders in the team sprint, showed her pace from a standing start with third in the 500m TT.
