A rider widely regarded as the world’s best, and one of her closest challengers, will go wheel-to-wheel at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester tonight.
Marianne Vos, the women’s world and Olympic road race champion, will resume her rivalry with Great Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead in the second round of the Revolution track racing series.
Vos, who has also been a world and Olympic champion on the track, and is the reigning world cyclo-cross champion, outsprinted Armitstead to take the road race crown at the London Games this summer.
Vos said: “Lizzie has a lot of track experience too so it’s going to be interesting.
“It was fun competing against her in the road race and it’ll be great to compete against her on the track.”
The Dutchwoman said she was uncertain how her British rival had prepared for this evening’s encounter, but confirmed her enthusiasm for racing at the National Cycling Centre.
“I have good memories of Manchester and of the velodrome. I had to win that race [in 2008] to get to the Olympics in Beijing. To have a standing ovation from a British crowd, it was pretty cool!”
Armitstead will not be the only British rider with an Olympic medal competing at tonight’s event.
Joanna Rowsell, who raced to a gold medal in a world record time with teammates, Laura Trott and Dani King in the women’s team pursuit, will return to competitive action for the first time since London.
ITV4 will show highlights of the event at 8pm on Wednesday December 5 and on the ITV Player.
