Wiggle Dragon Ride sells out in a day

Renamed for 2011 the Wiggle Dragon Ride, the UK’s largest cyclosportive sold out less than a day after opening for entries at midnight on 29 December with 1200 places sold within the first hour.

Starting from Pencoed, south Wales, on Sunday 5 June, 4,000 cyclists will tackle up to 200km of European-style climbs and rugged Welsh coastal roads as the event celebrates its eighth year.

Although the Wiggle Dragon Ride will be bigger than ever in 2011, a larger proportion of entries than in previous years have been reserved for the official charity, the Prostate Cancer Charity.

Organiser Lou Lousardi said; “Entries went live at midnight on the 29th December and 1200 places were filled in the first half hour, 3000 at the 12 hour mark and all of the basic entry places were filled by the end of the first day.

“Prospective entrants who have missed out on a place are recommended to watch the various cycling forums to take up entries via the Wiggle Dragon Ride transfer system from riders who are unable to take part.”

The 2011 route will be slightly amended from previous years to take in some stunning coastal roads as well as the famous climbs. For anyone who has ridden before, there is the same amount of climbing as in previous years, with the added dimension of enjoying the rugged and beautiful coastal roads.

Based in Pencoed, just outside Bridgend, and with excellent road, rail and international air links, the Wiggle Dragon Ride is a circular 45, 120 or 200km non-competitive road cycle challenge ride over the beautiful hills and valleys of south Wales.

With around 3,000m of climbing, the route takes in the classic Milk Race/Tour of Britain climbs of the Bwlch, Rhigos and Brecon Beacons mountain roads. The Dragon Ride was one of the first annual cyclosportives to be held in the UK and the first to gain a place on the UCI calendar.

For 2011, ride facilities will include:

  • Pasta Party at finish for all riders (included in entry price).
  • Revised routes include Heritage Coastal section
  • Camping site close to start area
  • Finishers Certificate that can be downloaded from the results page
  • Finishers medal
  • Training schedule (Active Trainer)
  • Three training weekends (March, April & May), over the 2011 Wiggle Dragon Ride route
