Commonwealth Games 2014: men’s road race – five observations

Geraint Thomas seals popular gold medal as rain-soaked Glasgow hosts war of attrition

A man scorned is a man to be feared as Peter Kennaugh (Isle of Man) has proved in the last six weeks.

Since being surprisingly omitted from Team Sky’s Tour de France squad, the 25-year-old has been crowned national champion, won the Tour of Austria and won points race silver on the track at the Commonwealth Games.

And the Manxman, with Mark Cavendish in the team car behind him as directeur sportif, was on the march again in Glasgow – attacking almost from the off on a course which last year saw him finish fourth in the national road race.

When nobody followed him, the British champion ploughed on alone – though he was eventually brought back into check by the ever-decreasing peloton.

Nevertheless, while eighth place will be a disappointment to a man strongly fancied as the pre-race favourite, Kennaugh showed once again why he is tipped as a future world champion by his former mentor at the British Cycling Academy, Rod Ellingworth.
