Cancellara's run finally ends
After 11 consecutive podium finishes in the Monument races, Fabian Cancellara finally had to settle for less on Sunday with a seventh place on the Via Roma the best he could muster.
Having said that, he can probably consider himself the first of the ‘non-sprinters’ in the race, and his form looks to be just where he wants it heading back into his own territory: the cobbles.
A lot has been written about Spartacus’ run of form in the big races and it bears mentioning again as it’s such an impressive feat. In the modern peloton there are few riders who perform when it matters with the same consistency as the Swiss, and although there’s a younger generation beginning to close the gap on Cancellara, there’s no reason to believe that he won’t add another Monument victory to his palmarès before April is out.
