Once again Chris Froome instigated the race-winning attack, but once again he lost contact with his elite rivals shortly afterwards. It is proof, once more, of his race rustiness before anybody starts ringing alarm bells there is certainly no reason to panic. Froome’s phenomenal form last season, where he warmed up for the Tour de France with victories left, right and centre has raised the bar for the Kenyan-born Brit. He is keen to emulate his achievements this time out, and has already defended his Tour of Oman crown.
But, it must be remembered he has arrived at the Volta a Catalunya on the back of an injury. It is just the second race of his season and he is still proving himself to be on good form when it comes to the race-defining climbs. He is also devoid of some of his key domestiques – though David Lopez and Kanstantsin Siutsou have put in huge efforts for him. As form finders go, the fact he is up there with Contador, Rodriguez and Quintana is a good sign. The Tour de France Grand Depart is still some 99 days away. Plenty of time for Froome to step it back up again.
