Jan Janssen
Jan Janssen
Jan Janssen was one of few riders to have completed the double who won his Paris-Roubaix title first.
Having led home the chasing group behind Gimondi in 1966, Janssen went one better the following year. Winning the sprint from a large leading group, the Dutchman – who was crowned world champion three years earlier – beat off the likes of Eddy Merckx to seal his first, and only, win in the Queen of the Classics.
He went on to win the points classification at the Tour for the third time and became the first Dutch rider to win the Vuelta later in 1967, before following it up by winning the Tour de France in 1968, trading his orange jersey of the Netherlands’ national team with the maillot jaune.
Janssen did not wear the yellow jersey at all throughout the race, until he overtook Belgian Herman van Springel with victory in the final day’s time trial.
His winning margin of 38 seconds was the smallest ever at the time and remains the third narrowest in the Tour’s history.
