Emma Pooley
Emma Pooley
Emma Pooley called time on a memorable career last year, winning Commonwealth Games silver behind England team-mate Lizzie Armitstead in her final road race.
Pooley excelled against the clock during her career, winning three national titles, Olympic silver in 2008, Commonwealth Games silver in 2014 and the world title in 2010.
Pooley enjoyed phenomenal success in 2010, winning the national road race alongside her time trial victory, and also picking up two stage race victories and the GP de Plouay and La Fleche Wallonne Feminine before pulling on the rainbow jersey.
Her 2010 success, which came in the second of her three seasons with the Cervelo Test Team, saw her crowned BOA Athlete of the Year.
Her final season was also packed with success, including three stages of the Giro d’Italia Femminile – including back-to-back successes on stages eight and nine – on her way to the Queen of the Mountains title.
Her penchant for pushing herself to the edge and beyond was proven when, upon retiring to concentrate on triathlon and duathlon, she won the Powerman Duathlon world championships at the first attempt – setting a new course record in the process.
Finest moment: To crown a superb year in 2010, which had included several major successes against the clock, in one day races and in stage races, Pooley won gold at the World Championships, winning the time trial by 15 seconds ahead of Judith Arndt.
