Once again the rain could not dampen spirits as fans lined roads from Armagh to Dublin to welcome the Giro d’Italia’s Irish stage.
Won in Dublin by Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano), the stage ended three great days on the Emerald Isle – with the German having enjoyed them even more so thanks to his two stage wins.
Though widely expected to win the two stages, the manner of his success was a further reminder of just how fast the big sprinter is with the Tour de France – and a battle with Mark Cavendish and Andre Greipel – to come.
For now, however, Kittel celebrated his 26th birthday with a big win and retained the red jersey in the process.
