Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) issued another reminder as to why he is considered the greatest Grand Tour rider of this generation with yet another victory at the Giro d’Italia, sealing back-to-back Grand Tour wins in the process after September’s Vuelta a Espana success.
El Pistolero kick-started the final week of racing with a masterclass on the Mortirolo, after his GC rivals on the Astana team had initially taken advantage of a puncture to distance him, to stretch his commanding overall lead.
The final week didn’t belong entirely to the Spaniard – Mikel Landa won the aforementioned stage 16, before his Astana team-mate Fabio Aru won stages 19 and 20 as the Kazakh-based team sealed second and third on the final overall podium.
But the maglia rosa never looked like slipping from Contador’s grasp after the wresting it back from Aru after the individual time trial in week two.
