It promised to be spectacular and, as ever, Milan-San Remo certainly lived up to its pre-race billing.
Another thrilling finale was won by Katusha’s Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) as the Norwegian stormed to the biggest victory of his career.
Sprinting heavyweights Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quickstep), Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) were among the beaten riders at the death, while Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) beat his handlebars in frustration at another second place.
Despite heavy rainfall, the first Monument of the year proved to be an unmissable spectacle once more.
