Peter Sagan (Cannondale) must be wondering what exactly he must do to end his search for a stage win at this year’s Tour de France.
The Slovakian ace boasts a commanding overall lead in the green jersey but despite nine top-ten finishes – stage 12 being the fourth time he has finished second this year – he has still not added to his four career victories in the race.
Cannondale hit the front in the final kilometres for the Slovakian champion, but it was to no avail as Alexander Kristoff foiled his ambitions once again.
John Degenkolb (Giant-Shimano) – almost forced into the barriers when Matteo Trentin (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) went too wide in the sprint – and Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol), brought down by a crash with little more than three kilometres to race, were also left to rue what could have been.
