After the lows of his provisional doping suspension, before being cleared of any wrongdoing, Michael Rogers (Tinkoff-Saxo) has ensured his comeback has been one to remember.
The experienced Australian had already broken his Giro d’Italia duck, earning two hugely impressive stage wins at the Corsa Rosa, and his presence in the break on stage 16 of the Tour de France always looked ominous for his rivals.
Relying on all of his experience to climb steadily, reeling in every attack on the Port de Bales, before a descending masterclass to escape from the remains of the lead group, Rogers’ resurgence was never more obvious.
And while all this was happening at the head of the race, there was equal amounts of drama in the peloton, or at least what was left of it.
