The 58th edition of the Vuelta a Espana provided three weeks of pulsating action.
While yesterday’s run into Madrid was largely ceremonial, the battle for the lead of the race went to the penultimate stage, and a thrilling battle on the brutal slopes of the Alto de l’Angliru between the men who finished first and second: Chris Horner and Vincenzo Nibali.
Along the way, there were four wins for French riders, indicating a resurgence among the talents in one of cycling’s heartlands, a first victory in the rainbow stripes for world road race champion, Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing), and the continued emergence of cycling’s ‘super teams’ – Astana, Movistar, and Katusha.
Here are the highlights of the 58th edition of the Spanish national tour, captured through the lens of Stefano Sirotti.
