Having joined Team Sky for the maiden season, the spotlight was on Wiggins at the 2010 Giro d’Italia following his fourth place at the Tour de France the previous year.

And Wiggins ensured Team Sky enjoyed success on their very first day at a Grand Tour as – in the jersey of national champion – he stormed to victory in the stage one time trial in Amsterdam.

Wiggins beat BMC Racing duo Brent Bookwalter and Cadel Evans by two seconds on the 8.4km course to pull on the maglia rosa for the first time.

It was not to last, as a series of crashes on stage two saw him surrender the jersey to the Evans, but Team Sky at the very least had made their Grand Tour debut in style.
