Commonwealth Games 2014: men’s and women’s individual time trials – the contenders

Who will be crowned as the Commonwealth Games time trial champion in Glasgow?

David Millar won the Commonwealth Games time trial gold medal in Delhi four years ago and will defend his title on home soil.

Millar was removed from Garmin-Sharp’s Tour de France line-up at the last minute and, like Dowsett, will have used his disappointment to focus on success in Glasgow. Having not faced the rigours of a three-week Grand Tour, both riders have been able to tailor their Commonwealth Games preparations.

Millar may be riding his final season as a professional cyclist but the 37-year-old has the pedigree to stand on the podium once again. Besides Delhi gold, Millar’s TT medal haul includes two world championship silvers from 2001 and 2010, and a British national title from 2007, when he also won the road race.

The Scotsman arrives in Glasgow on the back of a period of intense training in the Pyrenees but, now in the twilight years of his career, Millar will face stiff competition from a number of young riders – including Dowsett, Thomas and a trio of Australians – ready to step into the veteran’s shoes.
