Stage one – the form finder
With a challenging first week awaiting the Tour de France peloton, anybody not on the startline in top shape could find themselves in trouble.
And with that in mind, LeMond is expecting the first stage, the time trial in Utrecht, to offer some clear indications of any rider in early trouble.
“I think stage one will be a good stage to see among the top ten who are physically in good shape,” he explained.
“It’s not just a 5km prologue, it’s 13.8km and from a physical point of view it’s the same effort you would do on a very intense climb.
“If you are slightly off then it’s not a good sign. It’s more of a formality in the grand scheme of it, but it’s a good indication of who’s in form.”
