Stage nine – the team time trial

The first block of racing is concluded with a team time trial on stage nine, and the course could pose problems for some teams, LeMond believes.

A lumpy route could mean big splits opening up ahead of the first rest day, and LeMond even wishes the stage could be longer.

“I think the team time trial will be very interesting,” he said. “It’s 28km – I’d love to see a 50km team time trial but 28km is a very intense effort.

“The course is not flat, it’s up and down and that carries a big risk for teams’ to blow up. It’s a very different kind of effort to a flat time trial.

“That was my speciality and I can tell you many teams will approach it inappropriately and could lose a lot of time.”
