Richie Porte’s withdrawal from Paris-Nice, with the Australian rider now set to replace the injured Chris Froome at Tirreno-Adriatico, means Geraint Thomas will step up to lead Team Sky in France. After a solid, albeit unspectacular, start to the season it could be the boost the Welshman needs as he bids to deliver Sky’s third consecutive victory in the race. He has proved he can handle the responsibility of team leader before, wearing the ochre jersey for several days at last year’s Tour Down Under.
Thomas’ ability on the climbs is well-known thanks to his stunning efforts in support of Chris Froome at last year’s Tour de France, despite a broken pelvis. And with a strong support squad – despite the deployment of Wiggins and Porte at Tirreno-Adriatico – he has the chance to ride for himself now. He stated earlier in the year, he is looking to find his true role within the team. If he wants it to be as a leading stage racer, fate has presented him with his best chance yet of proving his worth.
