Strava stats: where the Giro d’Italia will be won on stage 20

The two final climbs of the 2016 Giro d'Italia on which the pink jersey will be sealed

The winner of the 99th Giro d’Italia will be crowned this weekend, with one more epic battle awaiting in the mountains before the city centre finale in Turin.

Stage 20, from Guillestre to Sant’Anna di Vinadio, will be the last chance for the mountain men to stake their claim for the maglia rosa, after an enthralling stage 19 blew the top of the GC apart.

A new climb, the 19.9km Col de la Lombarde is the race’s penultimate climb before an uphill finish on the Sant’Anna di Vinadio concludes the climbing action.

Whoever is in pink after the stage will expect to hold it on the pan-flat Turin circuit for a largely processional stage on the final day so where will the jersey be won?
Strava have offered an insight into what’s in store at the end of the final stage, when the peloton crosses back into Italy from France.

First up, the tiny narrow road on the 2,350m Col de la Lombarde boasts an average gradient of seven per cent, with the fastest recorded Strava time a gruelling 1:11:16.

And will there be a last-gasp assault on the maglia rosa on the Sant’Anna di Vinadio summit?

At 2.2km in length it’s a short climb but it could prove to be a crucial one – an average gradient of eight per cent awaits with Strava KOM Alberto Amici having reached the summit in seven minutes and 47 seconds.
