Robert Gesink misses 2016 Tour de France

Wilco Kelderman targets stage wins while in-form sprinter Dylan Groenewegen prepares for debut

Last year’s sixth-place finisher Robert Gesink will miss the 2016 Tour de France due to injuries suffered in a crash at the Tour de Suisse.

LottoNL-Jumbo have named their nine-man line-up for the race, with Wilco Kelderman being afforded a free role as they target stage wins, but Gesink – who would have led the team’s GC charge – misses out.

Steven Kruijswijk, who finished fourth at the Giro d’Italia having lost the race lead on the penultimate mountain stage, is also not selected – he is due to race the Vuelta a Espana instead.

Kelderman finished seventh at the 2014 Giro d’Italia, but directeur sportif Nico Verhoeven insists his role will not be changed in the absence of the fellow Dutchman Gesink.

“The absence of Gesink doesn’t change the role Wilco Kelderman’s going to play,” he said. “Wilco goes to the Tour de France in a free role. Now Gesink falls away, he holds the position we planned with him.”

Gesink admitted his frustrations at missing out, believing he was finding form nicely.

“I’ve put a lot of energy in my preparations for the Tour de France and I felt strong on Tenerife. It’s a big disappointment that I have to miss the Tour because of this setback,” he said.

In his place, George Bennett has been selected instead on the back of 14th place at the Criterium du Dauphine, while Dylan Groenewegen leads the LottoNL-Jumbo sprinting charge.

The 23-year-old has picked up six victories in his debut season with the Dutch team, including the first stage of the Tour de Yorkshire, but insists he is looking to gain experience first and foremost rather than put pressure on himself for results.

“Of course we want to deliver something beautiful in the Tour and when it’s up to me, it’s going to be something very beautiful,” he said. “But I shouldn’t expect myself to be able to win a stage, immediately.”

Vuelta a Espana stage winner Bert-Jan Lindeman is also selected, alongside Classics specialist Sep Vanmarcke.

Germans Robert Wagner and Paul Martensm, Belgian rider Maarten Wynants, and Dutchman Timo Roosen complete the line-up.

And Kelderman is relishing his free role, concluding: “I’m looking forward to the Tour and we’re going to aim for good results.

“My free role gives me the chance to choose some stages to aim for. My chances are in the mountains.

“It’s a good thing that the sprint train goes to the Tour as well. They are in a flow and are very motivated.”
