Arnaud Demare (FDJ) won the first road stage of Paris-Nice, outsprinting Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Ben Swift (Team Sky) after an enthralling stage.
Crosswinds had shredded the peloton earlier in the race, thanks to Team Sky’s pace-setting efforts, while the four gravel sections late caused further problems after the bunch came back together.
Swift kicked first in the sprint, after a late attack had been reeled in, but it was Demare who proved fastest to take victory as prologue winner Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEDGE) defended the yellow jersey.
Thomas de Gendt (Lotto-FixAll), Perrig Quemeneur (Direct Energie), Steven Tronet (Fortuneo-Vital Concept) and Thierry Hupond (Delko Marseille Provence KTM) formed the day’s break, escaping early on and opening up a big lead.
