Team Sky’s Colombians were surprisingly left out of Chris Froome’s support squad in 2013, but Sergio Henao’s return to action could allow him a place on the Leeds start line this time around. Cousin Sebastian excelled at the Giro d’Italia, and Sergio will state his claim for a place at the Tour de Suisse.
Seventh at the Tour of Oman in his lone stage race appearance this season, Henao’s climbing ability is undoubted – he was ninth on Green Mountain in that race just to prove it. He was also a key part of Sky’s Giro d’Italia squad last year and, though more-than capable on his day against the climb, it is on the tough climbs where he is at his best.
That he could be a part of Team Sky’s squad after his extended absence from racing while he underwent testing for his high blood-oxygen levels, caused by training at altitude, shows the regard he is held in. With Richie Porte, Geraint Thomas and David Lopez also fighting to support Froome’s Tour bid, it could be a formidable Sky line-up in Leeds.
