HIGH - Giro d’Italia 2013
Cavendish started his Omega Pharma-QuickStep (as the team was named in 2013) career in perfect style by winning stage one of the season-opening Tour de San Luis and he arrived at the Giro d’Italia in May in fine form having already secured six victories.
And the Manx Missile wasted no time in building on that total at the Corsa Rosa either, blasting to victory on stage one in Napoli despite his sprint train misfiring.
Four more stage wins followed, as Cavendish claimed victory in every one of the race’s flat sprint stages, with victory number three, on stage 12, a particularly important career.
In torrential rain on the stage from Longarone to Treviso, the then 27-year-old beat Nacer Bouhanni to victory and, in doing so, recorded win number 100 of his career.
More was to follow too, as the untouchable Cavendish’s victory on the final stage in Brescia was enough to claim the red points jersey – making amends for narrowly losing out to Joaquim Rodriguez the previous year.
That red jersey completed his collection of Grand Tour points classification wins, making him only the fifth rider to complete the career triple.
