HIGH - national champion 2013
Less than a month after his Giro d’Italia success, Cavendish won another prized jersey for the first time – this time adding the British national title to his palmares.
On the punchy Glasgow circuit, Cavendish had just one Omega Pharma-QuickStep team-mate in the race, but home favourite Andy Fenn proved a willing, and capable, ally.
The Scot set the early pace, which was sufficient to see a six-man group of Cavendish, Fenn, Ian Stannard, Peter Kennaugh, Ben Swift and David Millar go clear – never to be seen again by the peloton.
Cavendish was in superb form and took the circuit’s short, steep climbs in his stride. As the race reached its denouement, Swift and Fenn has fallen back and Kennaugh was dropped on an attack-filled final lap, leaving the race Cavendish’s to lose.
And sure enough, the Manxman made no mistake, outsprinting Stannard in the finale to ensure he would roll out for the Tour de France in the red, white and blue stripes of British champion.
