Tour de France 2013: stage five – rider reaction

Mark Cavendish’s Tour de France got off to a disappointing start as his hopes of wearing the yellow jersey were dashed after a crash in stage one and he then suffered a bout of bronchitis.

But the Manx Missile was not voted the Tour’s greatest ever sprinter without good cause, and he proved he deserves such a title after pipping Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Sky) to take victory in stage five – the 24th of his career.

As Cavendish crossed the finishing line though, just 100m further back a huge crash saw several riders hit the deck and held a number of others up as they blocked the road.

See what Cavendish, David Millar and Geraint Thomas had to say after the fifth day of the 100th Tour de France.
