Sir Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain) – World Championship ITT
Sir Bradley Wiggins arrived in Ponferrada having twice won world championship time trial silver – and this time Wiggo went one better.
Wiggins rode in the skinsuit of British national champion having won that title for a third time and, with three-time world champion Tony Martin his arch rival, set a stunning pace in Spain to average a mind-boggling 50kph on the 47.1km course.
Only four other riders finished within a minute of his 56 minute and 25 second mark, which proved unbeatable on the day.
Martin rolled in some 26 seconds slower to take silver, with the German’s three-year reign ended in stunning fashion as Wiggins pulled on the rainbow jersey.
It capped a fine season for Wiggins, with a top-ten finish at Paris-Roubaix, overall Tour of California success and Commonwealth Games team pursuit silver also on the CV.
Wiggins saved his best performance until last, however, to reaffirm his place as British road cycling’s most gifted performer.
