Geraint Thomas (Wales) – Commonwealth Games
Geraint Thomas enjoyed his best season to date, and we’ve already recognised the Welshman as one of our top rouleurs of 2014.
Thomas’ crowning moment of a season which included a strong cobbled Classics campaign (with top ten finishes at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix) and a best-ever Tour de France finish was success at the Commonwealth Games.
Having already won time trial bronze, Thomas started among the favourites but he executed his race plan to perfection, with the peloton shredded by adverse weather in Glasgow.
In wet, windy and miserable conditions, Thomas joined Jack Bauer (New Zealand) and Scott Thwaites (England) in attacking and accelerated early on the final lap to build up a big lead.
After a heart-stopping puncture, and seemingly endless wheel change, Thomas profited from the speed of his attack as he was able to hold his lead to the end.
And he showed little fatigue from his Tour de France efforts to get his arms in the air and celebrate another milestone to add to his glowing palmares.
