London has notched up its millionth Boris bike journey – just ten weeks after the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme was launched.
The scheme has more than 92,000 subscribers and 1,002,789 journeys had been made by midnight on Thursday.
The millionth rider, plus three friends, is set to be handed a free five-year subscription by Transport for London, along with £1,000 to spend on cycling accessories at Bobbin Bicycles in Islington.
“A million thank-yous go to Londoners for the warmth in which they have embraced our beautiful blue bikes,” said Mayor Boris Johnson.
“The zest in which people have taken to two wheels and joined the cycling revolution we are engendering in the capital has gladdened my heart.”
The scheme is currently only available to members but is expected to be launched on a pay-as-you-go basis later this year.
