Forest of Dean Spring Classic becomes two-day event for 2015

Sportive now includes Monmouthshire Challenge and returns to May Day Bank Holiday

The Forest of Dean Spring Classic will become a two-day event over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend this year.

Returning to its usual spot in the calendar, the sportive has also returned to Monmouth Town Centre for 2015, organisers Wheels in Wheels Events have announced.

The 11 edition of the sportive will feature the Monmouthshire Challenge on Sunday May 3 before the traditional Forest of Dean event with two courses on offer on the Monday.

The former will take in a 100km route through the county, including some of the British Road Race Championship route where Peter Kennaugh (Team Sky) and Laura Trott (then Wiggle-Honda) emerged victorious last summer.

A testing route, it is being offered either as a warm-up for the main event the following day or as a less-strenuous sportive and will cost just £15 to enter.

The following day will then see riders take on the undulating, picturesque Monmouthshire countryside, with a 145km Classic route boasting 20 individual climbs through the county and the Forest of Dean.

More than 8,000ft of ascending feature on the route, with Broadwell, Bulls Hill and Symonds Yat – a 25 per cent grind just before the finish – all among the ascents.

The shorter, 100km route takes in the most of the traditional route but with a more forgiving eight climbs included, but still amounting to more than 6,000ft of ascending in total – including Symonds Yat.

Starting and finishing in Vauxhall Fields, near to the town centre, free parking and camping are available on site.

Fully-signed routes, well-stocked feed stops, timing, mechanical back up from Shimano and a broom wagon are also included, alongside free tea, coffee and porridge at the start.

Entries, which are limited to 500 riders, and more information can all be found at www.wheelsinwheels.com.
