British cyclists have enjoyed another stellar year on the track, with Team GB once again topping the cycling medal table at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Led by Laura and Jason Kenny, both nominated for the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after winning five gold medals between them, British cyclists claimed 12 medals in Brazil.
And, to celebrate the success of those riders, Ribble Cycles have put together this map showing the location of all 28 cycling tracks in the UK – including those which have played a vital role in the success of riders like the Kennys, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy.
Wiggins added a fifth Olympic gold medal (and eighth in total) to his name in Rio but it all began on the outdoor velodrome in Herne Hill, London, as a child. Hoy, meanwhile, also started his journey to becoming a six-time Olympic champion on an outdoor track; this time the Meadowbank velodrome in Edinburgh.
Of the UK’s 28 cycling tracks, six velodromes are indoors: Calshot, Derby, Glasgow, London, Manchester, and Newport.
The UK’s cycling facilities are also set to receive a £15 million cash injection from the government, as part of Yorkshire’s successful bid to host the 2019 UCI Road World Championships.
But there’s no need to wait until then, find your local track on the map below and get riding! Check out the Ribble Cycles blog for more on UK’s velodrome.
