Long Mynd, Asterton
Long Mynd, Asterton
Long is the operative word when it comes to the Long Mynd in Asterton. Not because it is a lengthy climb – far from it – but its gradient makes it a slow, drawn out ascent pure pain.
The ascent kicks up sharply with a 25 per cent left corner, which then opens out onto the brutal slope. With the gradient well into double figures and the surface of the road not ideal either, this 850m ascent seems much longer.
A final right bend offers some relief before the peak, but, with an average gradient of 18.8 per cent, there is a reason the climb has built up its infamous reputation.
