York’s Hill, Kent
York’s Hill, Kent
Host of the world’s oldest bike race – the Catford hill climb – York’s Hill in Kent has a long-standing place among Britain’s toughest climbs, with fans lining the road in numbers to cheer on competitors each October.
Though just 600m in length, the average gradient is 13 per cent with sections on the tight, twisting road nearly double that.
A debris-strewn surface and steep-sided banks mean it’s hard to pick a clean line up this narrow slither of road and the crumbling tarmac only adds to the difficulty.
The ascent is at its most fierce as the peak approaches and you’re already in the red. Allez!
