With an average gradient of 13 per cent, the climb actually kicks up to 33 per cent in parts with a series of brutal switchbacks.
The first pair kick up to 20 per cent while the next is the final nail in the coffin for many riders as the road reaches its maximum gradient.
One of a number of fierce climbs in the Lake District, the Hardknott Pass is arguably the most fearsome of the lot.
