Vale Street, Bristol
What Vale Street lacks in distance it more than makes up for in gradient.
Tackling Vale Street is as much a mental hurdle as a physical one, with the road ramping up so sharply at the bottom it is almost vertical.
Boasting the title of the steepest residential street in Britain, Vale Street is flanked by terraced houses with steps provided for pedestrians.
Cyclists should take a run-up as they approach the climb, though it does level out towards the top to give this 200 metres of tarmac an average gradient of 25 per cent.
Of the 70 Strava users to have attempted the climb, it says something that it is former British pro Tom Southam who is top of the tree.
