Porlock Hill, Somerset
There are two main climbs out of the Somserset village of Porlock heading west towards Lynton, both serving up very different ascents.
While the Porlock Toll Road is longer with an Alpine feel to its thanks to its 6.5km length and five per cent average gradient, the maximum pitch is a relatively sedate eight per cent. It’s on this road that the Minehead CC holds an annual hill climb.
The A39 Porlock Hill, however, is a real stinger, still 2.5km long with an average gradient of some 12 per cent and maxing out at 25 per cent.
Both are excellent ascents, with the Toll Road a superb climb which rises through the woods, but it you’re after the steep stuff then you know where to look.
