Great Dun Fell, Cumbria
Great Dun Fell, Cumbria
A well-hidden, private access road to the remote radar station at Great Dun Fell is becoming well-known as a giant of the Lake District.
Drawing comparisons with Pyrenean ascents, the climb also boasts the advantage of, in its latter section at least, being traffic-free.
Almost 7.5km in total, the climb can be split into several distinguishable sections – each no less grueling than the last as the gradient rises towards one-in-four.
A false flat offers some respite, but the road then kicks up sharply again before a long straight drag towards the golf ball-shaped beacon at the summit. Prepare yourself for an average gradient of 7.7 per cent over the climb’s entire length.
