This edition of Lake’s CX170 shoe has been launched to celebrate Andy Hampsten’s efforts on the Passo di Gavia in the 1988 Giro d’Italia.
A fibreglass-injected nylon sole is normally a feature of shoes of a lower price, and perhaps quality, but we experienced good power transfer from an impressive level of stiffness.
Using the BOA lacing system, a feature of Lake’s higher end models, tightening the shoe was a doddle. For those who prefer a buckle and strap fastening, the CX200 is sold at the same price, but we were impressed with the BOA. Velcro straps can be prone to stretch over time; the BOA system may offer greater longevity. Simple to use (turn the dial clockwise to tighten and pull to loosen), it can also be adjusted on the fly more easily than a buckle and strap.
The dial is positioned on the back of the shoe (a similarity with the Lake CX236C previously reviewed), allowing the wire to pass around the heel, bringing tension to bear on the front and rear parts of the shoe, which we found eliminated slipping. Minor adjustment was needed at the beginning of a ride, but we finished a 70km training loop in comfort.
We were disappointed by the absence of markings on the sole, which added significantly to the time required to position the cleat. The shoe is compatible with three-hole cleats such as those used with LOOK pedals. It is also compatible with Shimano’s SPD platform, making the CX170 an option for tourists, commuters, and cyclists whose ride will be interupted by walking (although riders on SPDs are more likely to opt for a shoe with a recessed cleat). While on the topic, the CX170 has a thick-ish sole that raised the front end of the foot rather higher than usual when walking than we were used to.
The leather upper survived a month of regular use without marks or scuffs, which bodes well for its longevity. There is no venting under the sole, but the mesh vents on top kept our feet perfectly cool during the rare temperature rises experienced during the unseasonable conditions of our test period (late May, June).
The CX170 is available in sizes from 39 to 48 and in two colour choices: the white, red and green tested, and black with white and silver detailing. They retail at £109.99, although many online retailers are offering the shoe for around £90.
