Chris Froome became the first British rider to tame Mont Ventoux and win a Tour de France stage at its summit on Sunday – and it’s a moment the Team Sky leader will treasure for the rest of his life.
Froome extended his lead with a stunning victory on the Giant of Provence and now leads the 100th edition of the Tour de France by four minutes and 14 seconds with six stages remaining.
The longest stage of the Tour – and, in fact, the longest stage since 2000 at 242.5km – was described as “savage” by Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), who finished in the gruppetto, while David Millar (Garmin-Sharp) had time to soak up the Bastille Day atmosphere as he “cruised” up to Ventoux’s 1,912m summit.
Here’s more rider reaction from Froome, Cavendish, Millar and more.
