Alejandro Valverde entered the realms of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege greats by becoming only the sixth man to win the oldest of the Classics three times or more.
Valverde’s third triumph arrived courtesy of a strong sprint to beat Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-QuickStep) – the same man he beat to win La Fleche Wallonne earlier in the week.
That finale had arrived at the end of a day packed with action, though, with attacks aplenty as you would expect on the Ardennes hills.
