Sidi Carbon Wire

The Italian giants are back with a new top flight shoe that'll set pulses racing

Sidi have a huge reputation both for making outstanding bike shoes and ridiculous adverts. Fortunately, anyone’s who’s had the pleasure of riding in their shoes will be more than happy to forgive them for once making Filippo Pozzato take off all his clothes and cover his, er, modesty, with his bike shoes. Not, we imagine, that Pippo took too much persuading.

The first thing you probably noticed about the Sidi Wire Carbon Venice is the price. It’s big. But Sidi have earned the right to charge so much and there’s a reason the brand commands so much respect. Sidi shoes are second to none.

Back in the day, Sidi were one of the first brands to offer cleat integration with shoes when founder Dino Signori decided there had to be a better way of doing things than simply nailing cleats to the bottom of shoes. So next time you change your cleats and don’t need to search for a hammer, it’s Signori you need to thank.

Anyway, this model – the Carbon Wires – head up Sidi’s range and are the very same shoes Chris Froome rode to Tour de France victory in 2015.

One of Sidi’s unique features are the dials. Loads of bike shoes use dials to tighten and loosen wires that cross the top of the shoe like laces, but Sidi’s are a little different. For a start, instead of just twisting the dial as is usually the case, you press the small, red button to make a handle pop up and the whole process easier. It’s a small thing, but it’s an elegant solution to shoe fastening.

Look at Sidi’s shoes and you can see they’ve thought an awful lot about comfort and fit. The adjustable heel cup can be tightened and loosened to refine how the shoe fits around the heel and achilles to stop that annoying movement you get when you’re out of the saddle or sprinting.

On top of that, Sidi have made the heel adjuster replaceable – as are the bumpers on the sole – meaning you can keep the shoes running as long as you want, which is just as well seeing as they cost three hundred quid. But if they’re good enough for the Tour de France champion…
