Andrea Pinarello, the son the Italian bicycle manufacturer’s founder Giovanni, died after suffering a heart attack following the opening stage of an amateur race.
The 40-year-old collapsed after completing stage one of the Giro del Friuli and was successfully resuscitated by paramedics before suffering a second fatal heart attack.
Andrea was the marketing director for Pinarello, who supply bikes to Movistar and Team Sky.
“Team Sky sends our deepest sympathies to the Pinarello family following the tragic news of Andrea Pinarello’s passing,” read a statement on the British team’s website.
“Since our inception as a team, Pinarello have been a part of the Team Sky family and we are all devastated to lose such a young, vibrant person from our team and our sport.
“We want to convey our sincere condolences to the Pinarello family for their loss.”
