Back from a very enjoyable spin recently with Eurosport cycling commentator David Harmon, who is in training for a series of attacks on Road Records Association place to place records as part of Team Wiggle Tandem, I got to pondering the life of the pro cyclist.
Harmon is certainly living that life right now. His many team sponsors include, obviously, online retailer wiggle. Framebuilder Terry Dolan, who has built “Rocket 1”, the tandem the team will ride, has supplied a frame kitted out with Rotor non-circular chainrings on Agilis cranks. David was wearing a fully-branded skinsuit under his fully-branded gilet. Over a coffee and, in my case, cake he said he was looking forward to getting a Verenti Rhigos sportive bike from wiggle to go with his Focus road bike. That’s a lot of bikes to have to ride…
Perhaps most aptly, however, he is recovering from an injury. This was sustained during a training ride for the “Side to Side” Pembroke to Yarmouth record which left him with a bruised Achilles tendon and unable to train for several weeks. Since then he has had to train extra-hard to regain the lost fitness, enjoying top-level physio, sitting on a turbo-trainer for a couple of hours in the evening and wicking up the pace on what he proposed as a “gentle two-hour spin”.
Having ridden with DH a fair bit, I can say his training is beginning to pay off and it will be interesting to see how his record rides go. One thing’s for sure; Team Wiggle Tandem looks the part.
