Satmap Active 10

Handheld GPS products continue to grow in popularity as the evolving technology makes smaller and more affordable devices possible. The latest to join the fray is the Satmap Active 10, developed in the UK.

What makes the Active 10 different from other devices is that Ordnance Survey Explorer and Landranger maps can be stored on SD cards and loaded into the Active 10. Maps for the UK’s road network and 17 National Parks are available in 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale maps. Bespoke mapping is possible too.

The large colour screen on the rugged unit displays topographical maps, showing your current location, where you’ve been and which route you’re following. Even more interesting is the ability of the device to handle media files such as photos, movies and audio recordings, which can be used to label points of interest on a route. We can’t help thinking of the usefulness of knowing where the nearest pub or café is when riding in areas you’re not familiar with.

The Satmap Active 10 is available for £299 and comes with free high-quality national road mapping pre-loaded as standard. A range of high quality feature-rich maps including the 1:25,000 Explorer and 1:50,000 Landranger Ordnance Survey maps are immediately available – the National Parks cost £99.99 each.
