Mark Cavendish is perhaps the most photographed man in the peloton but these photos from stage 17 give a fresh insight into life as the Manx Missile at the Giro d’Italia.
Stage 17 was marked as a sprint stage in the Giro d’Italia’s road book but a category four climb close to the finish saw Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) escape to claim his second stage win of the 2013 race.
Cavendish rolled across the line in Vicenza, home of Campagnolo, one minute and 37 seconds after Visconti, who also won stage 15 on the Col du Galibier.
The Manx Missile still took a trip to the podium to collect yet another red jersey as leader of the points classification, presented to the 28-year-old by its designer, Paul Smith.
These stunning pictures by Simon Wilkinson tell Cavendish’s story from stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia.
