Mark Cavendish is a man who makes headlines, but after stage 11 of the Tour de France it was for the wrong reason after a spectator threw urine at the Manx Missile during his individual time trial.
Cavendish was also reportedly jeered by some sections of the crowd for his involvement in a crash which saw Tom Veelers (Argos-Shimano) hit the deck on stage ten.
Cavendish’s team-mate, Jerome Pineau, first alerted the world to the incident with a tweet, saying he was “ashamed” of the support, and, while the Manx Missile remained silent when he returned to the team bus, Omega Pharma-QuickStep chief Patrick Lefevere later confirmed the news.
Cavendish later broke his silence with a tweet of his own, joking that the apple juice at dinner “looks far from appetising”.
Here’s more reaction from another incident-packed day, which also saw Cavendish’s team-mate, Tony Martin, claim his second Tour de France stage win, while Team Sky’s Chris Froome finished second to extend his overall lead.
